Hold a piece of notebook paper up to your guitars fretboard &\u00a0turn the page so the lines and spaces match up with\u00a0the\u00a0guitars frets and ridges.\u00a0Follow this layout labeling the columns with\u00a0the fret numbers you\u2019re going to use. Most popular music only plays around 3-5 frets at a time so there\u2019s no need to layout the entire board.<\/p>\n

Draw shapes inside the columns to represent note types. Squares are fretted notes. Circles show open notes. Triangles demonstrate\u00a0hammers and pulls. Diamonds represent harmonics.<\/p>\n

The string-stems coming off of these shapes show you which strings to play.<\/p>\n

\"\"The system utilizes a 12-hour clock format; 1 o\u2019clock = the 1st string, 2 o\u2019clock = the 2nd string, and so on, up to 12 strings.<\/p>\n

Additional variations\u00a0are indicated by the shapes positioning and any\u00a0string-stem extensions\u00a0(showing fingering\/mutes\/pick direction\/etc…).<\/p>\n

Time passes from the bottom to the top of the\u00a0columns.<\/p>\n

A \u00a0line coming off the top of a shape represents a sustained note. The length of time a note is held is measured\u00a0based on the\u00a0value\u00a0assigned to each beat segment and the placement of the note\u00a0in relation to those segments.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Every column has a center pitch-axis used\u00a0to measures bends.<\/p>\n

Fluctuations in pitch are demonstrated by\u00a0line deviations from the center of this axis. Pitch variations are all measured over\u00a0time across\u00a0beat lines and along\u00a0pitch points in half step increments.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Each column border is a representation of the fret ridges on the fingerboard. Slides are shown with a line that crosses the column border over to the new position.<\/p>\n

Columns are grouped into\u00a0passages designated by a division line. Once you reach the top of the page\u00a0you would then continue at the bottom of the page, with the next passage over.<\/p>\n
